Dear friends,

It is my absolute pleasure to announce the newest innovative book from the League for Yiddish: Ikh muz dertselyn (I Must Tell You) by Dr. Sheva Zucker, long-time Yiddish educator and editor-in-chief emeritus of our biannual magazine Afn Shvel. This comprehensive new textbook is designed for high intermediate and advanced Yiddish students, and is based around a tremendous collection of memoirs and personal narratives by both beloved and lesser-known figures from the world of Yiddish literature and letters.

These autobiographical texts offer students an authentic foundation for their studies, and a direct connection to authors who lived their lives in (and sometimes for) Yiddish. The nine writers profiled include well-known Yiddish authors Kadya Molodowsky and Meylekh Ravitsh; iconic religious educator Sarah Schenirer; as well as memoirists Yekheskl Kotik, Hinde Bergner and Puah Rakowsky, among others. Ikh muz dertselyn features their reflections on life experiences as varied as emigration, early education, marriage, divorce, tensions between traditional Jewish life and assimilation, political activism, Yiddish literary life and the Jewish world in transition.

Ikh muz dertseyln is a perfect example of the type of cutting-edge resources that the League for Yiddish prides itself on supporting and developing, to help learn and improve one’s Yiddish in the 21st century. This new book represents a fantastic innovation in the world of Yiddish language acquisition, and Dr. Zucker’s decades of experience as a scholar, translator, and educator make her the ideal author of just such a text. For the countless students who have loved and learned from her popular beginner textbooks Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature and Culture, Vols. I and II, or anyone ready to move into more advanced materials, this new volume satisfies a long-awaited need for high intermediate and advanced learners.

Ikh muz dertseyln is available now in our online store. This new textbook is not only an essential resource for classrooms (both in-person and online), but a fabulous tool for independent learners, study groups, shmues- and leyen-krayzn, Yiddish clubs—and makes a great gift!

Speaking personally: I’ve studied with many Yiddish textbooks, and have bemoaned the lack of up-to-date options for more advanced learners looking for structured, in-depth study tools. As a student (and longtime admirer) of Sheva and her work, I myself am thrilled by the opportunity to work through this wonderful new resource, meet the fascinating real-life characters whose stories are woven throughout it, and learn a great deal along the way. I hope you join me!

Yours,

Yankl Krakovsky
