Thief! Thief! Stop That Thief!
Join the League for Yiddish Shmueskrayz on Zoom, with Eli Benedict. This month, we’ll be talking about:
Thieves, Swindlers and Criminals
Have you ever stolen anything? Or had something stolen from you? And what makes a good story about a thief?
From pickpockets and horse thieves to swindlers and master thieves, and master thieves – they all appear in Yiddish folktales, songs, sayings and literature. They even had a language of their own, and in many cities thieves had a say in what went on in the Yiddish theater!
All are invited to bring a story, anecdote, saying, memory, or simply something interesting in Yiddish on the topic. We’ll read a few short texts together, learn some useful words, shmooze, and have fun!
Everyone will have a chance to speak. Your Yiddish doesn’t have to be perfect. You just need enough to jump into the conversation!
