שבֿע צוקער איז אױספֿיר־סעקרעטאַר פֿון דער ייִדיש־ליגע און שעף־רעדאַקטאָר פֿון איר אָרגאַן, אױפֿן שװעל. זי איז די מחברטע פֿון צװײ פּאָפּולערע ייִדיש־לערנביכלעך, ייִדיש – אַן אַרײַנפֿיר: לשון, ליטעראַטור און קולטור (אַרבעטער־רינג, נ"י: ב' 1, 1994; ב' 2, 2002). די ביכער װערן באַלײט פֿון אױדיאָ־רעקאָרדירונגען, און װערן איצט איבערגעזעצט אױף פּאָרטוגעזיש און איטאַליעניש. פֿון די מיטל־1980ער יאָרן ביז 2004 איז זי געװען לעקטאָר אין ייִדיש און אין דער ייִדישער ליטעראַטור אין דוק־אוניװערסיטעט אין דורעם, צפֿון־קאַראָלײַנע. זי האָט געלערנט און געהאַלטן רעפֿעראַטן װעגן דער ייִדיש־קולטור און ייִדישער ליטעראַטור אױף פֿינף קאָנטינענטן, און אין אָנגעזעענע אוניװערסיטעטן, אַרײַנגערעכנט קאָלאָמביע, ניו־יאָרקער אוניװערסיטעט, בר־אילן, און אין דעם רוסישן מלוכישן אוניװערסיטעט פֿאַר הומאַניסטיק. אַ סך יאָרן איז זי געװען אַ לערערין אין אוריאל װײַנרײַך־פּראָגראַם אין דער ייִדישער שפּראַך, ליטעראַטור און קולטור, פּאַטראָנירט פֿון קאָלאָמביע־אוניװערסיטעט און דעם ייִדישן װיסנשאַפֿטלעכן אינסטיטוט – ייִװאָ, און זי לערנט װײַטער אין דעם נײַעם לאָקאַל פֿון דער פּראָגראַם אין ניו־יאָרקער אוניװערסיטעט.
זי איז אױפֿגעװאָקסן אין אַ ייִדיש־רעדנדיקער הײם אין װיניפּעג, קאַנאַדע, און האָט גראַדויִרט פֿון דער י.־ל. פּרץ־פֿאָלקשול, אַ ייִדיש־העברעיִשע טאָגשול. זי האָט אַ מאַגיסטער אין דער ייִדישער שפּראַך, ליטעראַטור און פֿאָלקלאָר פֿון קאָלאָמביע־אוניװערסיטעט און אַ דאָקטאָראַט אין פֿאַרגלײַכיקער ליטעראַטור פֿונעם גראַדויִר־צענטער פֿון דעם שטאָטישן אוניװערסיטעט פֿון ניו־יאָרק.

Dr. Sheva Zucker
Dr. Sheva Zucker is executive director of the League for Yiddish, Inc., and editor-in-chief of its publication Afn Shvel. She is the author of the popular textbooks Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature and Culture, Vols. I and II, which are now being translated into Portuguese and Italian. From the mid-1980s until 2004 she was Lecturer in Yiddish and Jewish Literature at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She has taught and lectured on Yiddish culture and Jewish literature on five continents, and at major universities, including Columbia, New York University, Bar-Ilan, and Russian State Humanities University. She has for many years been a teacher in the Uriel Weinreich Program in Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture at Columbia University/YIVO and continues to teach at the program's new location at New York University.
She grew up in a Yiddish-speaking home in Winnipeg, Canada, and graduated from the I. L. Peretz Folk School, a Yiddish-Hebrew day school. She holds an M.A. in Yiddish Language, Literature and Folklore from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature with a specialty in Yiddish literature from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.
In addition, Sheva Zucker was, for several years, the Translation Editor of the Pakn Treger, the magazine of the National Yiddish Book Center; her scholarly writing and translation work focuses on women in Yiddish literature. She thinks she can safely say that she has the only Yiddish-speaking children in Durham, North Carolina. She considers it a privilege and a gift to be able to edit a modern, beautiful publication like Afn Shvel. She believes that Yiddish readers have the right to a magazine that is every bit as interesting and pleasing to the eye as something they might read in any other language.
