‪Yiddish, Bundists... in Australia?!

‪Join us for a live Zoom conversation (in Yiddish) with

‪Arnold Zable

‪

In the streets of Carlton, once a center of Jewish life in Melbourne, Yiddish songs filled the air, Bundists gathered, Yiddish theater troupes performed, and a rich cultural world flourished.

‪This was the world in which writer Arnold Zable grew up, the son of Bundist immigrants from Poland. In our conversation, we will return with him to the streets of his childhood, the Yiddish schools, theaters, songs, and people who shaped the world of his early years. We will also explore how the memories of that world live on in his books.

Thief! Thief! Stop That Thief!

‪Join the League for Yiddish Shmueskrayz on Zoom, with Eli Benedict.

This month, we’ll be talking about:

‪Thieves, Swindlers and Criminals

‪

Have you ever stolen anything? Or had something stolen from you? And what makes a good story about a thief?

‪From pickpockets and horse thieves to swindlers and master thieves, and master thieves – they all appear in Yiddish folktales, songs, sayings and literature. They even had a language of their own, and in many cities thieves had a say in what went on in the Yiddish theater!

‪All are invited to bring a story, anecdote, saying, memory, or simply something interesting in Yiddish on the topic. We’ll read a few short texts together, learn some useful words, shmooze, and have fun!

‪Everyone will have a chance to speak. Your Yiddish doesn’t have to be perfect. You just need enough to jump into the conversation!

‪Thursday, October 29, 2026

‪West Coast: 10:00 AM

‪East Coast: 1:00 PM

‪London: 17:00

‪Paris: 18:00

‪Israel: 19:00
