In conjunction with the newest issue of Afn Shvel highlighting Yiddish in Australia,
this week's VFDV are about…
Australian animals /

Because Australia is an isolated land mass, most of the mammals and reptiles are unique to this continent and not found elsewhere in the world. Some Australian animals are well-known, such as the kangaroo, dingo, wombat and – of course – the koala and platypus. Others are less so. Some interesting facts about these unusual animals:
The bill of a platypus has a smooth texture that feels like suède.
Koalas can sleep up to nearly 20 hours a day.
The saltwater crocodile is the world's biggest reptile.
Koalas, kangaroos and possums are marsupials, that is, they carry their young in a pouch.
The echidna and platypus are monotremes, or egg-laying mammals – an extremely unusual combination!
And yes, indeed… there are more kangaroos in Australia than humans!
