In February 2013 the League for Yiddish launched the popular series “Verter fun der Vokh” (Words of the Week) on our Facebook page, League for Yiddish. Several hundred of these thematic lists have appeared in the years since, on all sorts of topics: cuisine, politics, holidays, sports, clothing, animals, health and many others. Although the words were mostly culled from our manuscript of the Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary (which was published by Indiana University Press in 2016), it became a “thing” in and of itself.

The weekly thematic lists continue to be posted on Facebook every week. They are also sent to our electronic mailing list. Our readers and followers learn from and get a kick out of the “Verter fun der Vokh” and frequently send us comments. As a result, we’ve decided to post past lists in alphabetical order of the topics (to be supplemented every week with new ones), so any Yiddish speaker, reader, student or lover who visits our website can also learn how to say these words in Yiddish and have fun doing so!

An earlier incarnation of “Verter fun der Vokh” — during the years 2002-2009 — was “VZMAY?” or “Vi Zogt Men af Yidish?” (How Do You Say It in Yiddish?”). That project was also sponsored by the League for Yiddish and distributed via email. Many of those words made it into the Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary, which we invite you to purchase here.
